Research and Reference Library

The Museum Library was established as a part of the Lahore Museum in 1894. It started from small collection of books in a single room.  Now it has grown up with a variety of collection i.e. books, periodicals, pamphlets, reports and articles related to museology.  The Library is located at upper story of Lahore Museum Auditorium.

Research & Reference Collection

Scope of Collection: Antiquities of Lahore Museum range from prehistoric times to modern period. All these help us to study our past and know historical realities. The library is rich in its stock of old journals and books on subjects such as museology; art; culture and civilization; ethnography; anthropology; architecture; numismatics; archaeology; history; crafts; oriental languages; and conservation, with special focus on the Indo-Pak sub-continent.

Rare and Old Collection

Museum Library is famous among the research scholars due to its rare and old collection. Scholars rush to Library for their research in the field of history and museology which is not available in all over the country.  The example of some rare and old collection in the Library is as under:-

  • Textile fabrics of India by Watson
  • Encyclopedia Britannica –1882
  • Archaeology Survey of India –1873
  • National Monuments of Indian –1885
  • Indian Antiquary by Richard Carnac –1893
  • The Arabian Nights – Published in 1897

Periodicals

The library is rich in old journals, magazines, newspapers and working reports. The scope of contents and subject of the said periodicals belong to history and museology. The most of the periodicals are donated to Library and have scattered issues / numbers.  The some of them for example are given below:-

Donated / Gifted Collection

All this has resulted in the library becoming a nucleus for research. The Museum is fortunate that a number of learned and literary persons have donated their valuable collections to the library, notable among them:-

  • Dr. Abdus Salam Khurshid

Membership Categories

The followings are the categories of readers:-
A.   Category-I(Lending Service)
A-I     The Chairman and BOG Members of Lahore Museum.
A-II   Museum Officers / officials
B. Category-II (Non Lending Service)
B-I   HONORARY LIFE MEMBER
a. The Director, Lahore Museum may confer honorary life membership to any five citizens
b.   Ex-Officer of the Lahore Museum can be Honorary Life Member of the Library.


B-II    LIFE MEMBERSHIP
Any citizen who can be eligible for Life Membership provided that he / she donates one time a sum of Rupees 2,000/=.

B-III   RESEARCH SCHOLAR MEMBERSHIP
Any person possessing Master Degree and above in history, archaeology, art and oriental languages can be member.

B-IV    STUDENT MEMBERSHIP
Graduate and post-graduate students engaged in research thesis or assignment in the various disciplines of art, history, archaeology and oriental languages could be a member providing a recommendation letter by the Head of their Institutions.

B-V     CASUAL MEMBERSHIP (1-3 months only)
Casual membership is also provided to the researchers / students related with art, history, archaeology, and oriental languages for a specific period i.e. 30 days, extendable twice a time.
